The Making of Muddum

April - June 2004

The Muddum project began as an idea in our minds which had been growing for a while, but became

more concrete during our travels through Asia (somewhere between India and Nepal). On returning to

Prague we decided to give this idea a go. After much research, arguments, and to be honest, guesswork,

we managed to get a plan ready to apply for a grant from the European Youth Programme (www.youth.cz).

The name came itself is a mixture of English and Czech (like us!) The English 'mud' and the Czech 'dum' or house.

It could be 'um' as in the verb 'umit', to know how to do something, and 'muj dum', my house)

The next step was to find a location. From the beggining we had Letna in mind due to the great atmosphere

and community spirit. After trying a few estate agencies, we realised the best way was to do it ourselves,

so we spent many afternoons, walking the streets of Letna, looking for spaces. After a few crises,

we found a great place opposite Letna Park which eventually became Muddum.

With the place arranged, and the grant application successful, we could now really start. The two months

reconstruction work was one of the hardest things we'd ever done, and we couldn't have managed without

the help from our friends (particular thanks go to Michal, Filip, Katerina, Hanka, Marketa, Omri, Alena

and Johana), family, and also our friendly landlord, Mr Horn. We also received a lot of help

with this website from Chris (London), Vaclaf and Tomas (Prague).

We just about finished in time for the opening,

and on June 13, 2004, Muddum was born.

Here are some pictures from this time.

And here are some all important 'before and after' pics.
